Liberty CityNew Super Mario Bros. had the second best launch of a DS title since Super Mario 64 DS, but this was not enough to unseat Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories from the top sales spot in the UK. According to a report by Gamasutra, New Super Mario Bros. debuted at second place on the Chart Track sales ranking this week. Three other DS titles appear on this week’s chart, including Over the Hedge, Animal Crossing, Brain Training, and Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends. Electronic Arts’ FIFA World Cup and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer take two other spots, due largely to the ongoing World Cup tournament. Rounding out the top ten are Tomb Raider: Legend and Hitman: Blood Money. Nintendo had a fairly soft launch of the DS Lite in the UK, but New Super Mario Bros. may help lift console sales.

DS BrowserOpera Software has launched their official “Opera For Nintendo” site, promoting both Opera for the Nintendo DS and for the Wii. The Wii section is just a teaser right now, but the DS section is more detailed. Opera offers tips and tricks to help users get the most out of their browsing experience. Users will find a number of shortcuts to speed their browsing sessions and a way to customize the search bar. The features tour shows off what most users already know, but there is a screenshot of the online help file. Gamers looking to promote the DS version of Opera on their own site can find banners there as well. There is also a “Caught in the Act” section, with users “caught” using the DS in various situations. Hopefully, the Wii section will be populated in the near future.

DS Lite BlackAccording to Japanese market research firm Media Create, the Nintendo DS is on track to sell 10 million units in Japan by August. Club Skill translates the article, saying the combined sales of the DS and DS Lite would be the fastest to reach that benchmark ever. The immense popularity of the DS has colored the announcements of Nintendo and its partners; Satoru Iwata recently had to confirm for shareholders that the production of the Nintendo Wii would not impact DS manufacturing. Square Enix also had to verify for a nervous public that they were working with Nintendo to make sure there would be enough production of the DS for their launch of Final Fantasy III. Nintendo has already sold more than 16 million DS consoles worldwide, most of that in the US and Japanese territories.

Bit Generations on the GBAWe reported earlier on how Japanese members of Club Nintendo (those lucky bastards!) would be able to test the latest in retro-GBA games, the Bit Generation Series. It seems that the series is getting more serious, and perhaps the testing is done! - Nintendo of Japan has just launched the official site for Bit Generations, which can be found here. The good news is it’s got some pretty pictures and icons for the new games. The bad news, of course, is that you won’t be able to read it unless you can read Japanese.

According to Joystiq, the site says that you’ll be able to purchase the first set of games for about $17 (so look for it in that price range on eBay!), on July 17th, and the second set will show up about 2 weeks later for the same price. Here’s hoping that these games don’t have a ton of Japanese menus. It looks like they could be great fun to try out once they make it over the Pacific.

Jamie Wilson, aka chronorox, filmed his speed run through the last castle in The New Super Mario Bros.  He was able to get from the castle gates, to Princess Peach’s side in 105 seconds.  The acrobatics are particularly impressive!  Don’t watch the clip if you don’t want to see the ending of The New Super Mario Bros.

Uno Nintendo DSIt turns out Uno isn’t just for your Xbox 360 anymore. This October Uno, Skip-Bo, and Uno Free Fall will be coming to the Nintendo DS.  The collection of Mattel games will be on one compilation cartridge, letting you get your on the go Uno fix quite easily.  Not a whole lot of information is available, but we can definitely imagine Uno taking advantage of the DS microphone for calling out Uno before your online opponent.  Can the mobile version of Uno be as addicting as the Xbox Live Arcade counterpart?  I wonder how many people are playing Uno for the first time on a console, and if a console is the future of card games.

Black DS LiteCompared with the sales numbers we’ve been seeing in the States and in Japan, the Nintendo DS Lite’s sales numbers in Britain are somewhat disappointing. Nintendo sold 35,000 DS Lites in its opening weekend - about 40% as many as were sold when the original “Fat” DS debuted. Compare that with the US, where the DS Lite sold 136,000 units in its first two days, which was roughly comparable to the performance of the original DS when it came out. Retailers in the area aren’t too disappointed though, especially considering the fact that much of the nation is currently glued to their televisions for the World Cup.

We thought that Europe knew they had a good thing when Nintendo announced the ultra-sleek black DS Lite for that region only! Surprisingly, only about half of the DS Lites sold in the UK were black. You’d think the Brits would at least snatch them up so that they could fetch a pretty penny (or pound) on eBay.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for the DS screenshotIn addition to removing the tacked-on rune-tracing from the new DS Castlevania game, series creator Koji Igarashi has announced that he is looking into whether to include WiFi-based play for the next Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. If he decides to, this would mark Castlevania’s first foray into the online arena.

Says Igarashi:

“It’s not confirmed yet, because I haven’t started work on it. [Laughs] That’s why I can’t confirm. But actually I’m thinking about preparing a special unlockable stage where you can do co-op over WiFi.”

Personally, I’ve never thought of Castlevania as a multiplayer game—I can’t imagine doing battle against another player or anything like that. Still, the possibility of something like co-op play might be a great addition to an already great series.

NHL 07When EA announced their cover athlete for NHL 07 last week, Nintendo fanboys noticed that there was no mention of a Gamecube or Nintendo DS version.  Nintendo followed up with an EA publicist to find out if the list was a final console rundown.  EA did confirm that NHL 07 will not be making an appearance on the Gamecube or the DS, however they confirmed support for the DS with other titles and hope to work with the Wii in the future.  Let’s hope that EA will kick it up when the Wii is released this fall.
